DB2 10 Roadshows provide additional information

DB2 Migrations Get a Push

The IBM DB2 training roadshow was in Washington DC this last week.  The presentations provided additional information on the full advantages of System Z and how it continues to lead all platforms in price performance.  Different tracks with information about Systems Z as the new cloud platform, data center modernization, CICS, WebSphere, and DB2 were great.  There were also some interesting items that have not been publicized too much.

Two news-worthy items were mentioned.  First, this April IBM will increase the price of DB2 Version 8 for z/OS to the DB2 Version 9 for z/OS pricing.  This is a further incentive for shops to migrate off Version 8.  During a crowd survey, a large number of raised hands showed that migrations to DB2 10 are still growing strong.  With this extra IBM incentive management will kick up the pressure on all the DBAs to get their shop to at least DB2 Version 9 as soon as possible.

Next the information APARs for V8 to V10 and V9 to V10 migrations continue to be updated and valuable for migration planning and DB2 education and training.

Last September a PK76100 APAR came out that enables Pairwise Join within Star Join enabled systems.  This APAR can improve the application access paths within your data warehouse and you might want to enable it for testing.

The other interesting item this week was IBM Watson kicking ass on Jeopardy.  This showed that IBM has the knowledge and technology to help your company win in today’s competitive business environment.  Jeopardy showed that any question an executive can think up can be answered with enough time, data and resources.  The Watson project truly performed well and got all three of those items.  Problem is that the average shop and their projects today usually only get two of those resources. 😉  Every executive is going to want you to build them a Watson!!!
