DB2 Performance Tuning & SQL Training

Take advantage of a full day of DB2 performance tuning training and/or a full day of SQL performance training to dramatically improve your IBM DB2 system, application and SQL query performance.

Attend these great DB2 performance and tuning training classes with IBM Gold Consultants, Information Champions and DB2 experts, Dave Beulke and Sheryl Larsen.

DB2 9 & 10 for z/OS SQL, Index and Optimization Enhancements — Sheryl Larsen

This class will increase the attendees SQL coding skill; specifically in knowing when to use which SQL feature to achieve the optimum results.  Special emphasis is placed on DB2 Version 9 and DB2 Version 10 for z/OS advanced SQL, index and optimization features.

Attendees at this class will be able to:

  • Use DB2 9 SQL extensions: TRUNCATE,  MERGE,  SELECT FROM UPDATE/DELETE, EXCEPT, INTERSECT, OLAP  Expressions, ORDER BY / FETCH FIRST in Subselect.
  • Use DB2 10 SQL extensions:Moving SUM, Moving  AVG, Temporal Data Requests.
  • Know when Index on Expression and Hash Access are effective.
  • Discover the 10 new DB2 9 Optimization enhancements
  • Enhance their knowledge of 9 new DB2 10 Optimization enhancements

What people say about this SQL Update training:

I thought it was the best SQL class that I had taken, especially with the content on the SQL performance rules.
~ Jim W., previous class attendee

I found Sheryl and the material to be excellent! I learned many SQL syntax and performance hints which I had not used before but could be used right now.
~ Eric L., previous class attendee

DB2 10 for z/OS Performance Training — Dave Beulke

The DB2 10 for z/OS Performance Training presents the research, process and impact of doing a performance review of your DB2 z/OS environments, systems, and applications.

This class focuses on problem areas found at consulting clients over the last 14 years and details all the new DB2 10 enhancements in system configurations, database designs and batch, online and web applications.  These DB2 10 enhancements and techniques have dramatically reduced daily CPU consumption and saved clients millions of dollars in CPU costs.

Attendees will:

  • Understand how to reduce costs and improve DB2 performance
  • Learn about the new DB2 10 performance factors
  • Understand how  to fix I/O and CPU performance problem applications

What people say about this DB2 10 for z/OS performance training:

~Good information on V10 features. The materials will be great reference material.

~The examples and extensive class slide notes were great for performance research.

~I was pleasantly surprised to see the Dave’s holistic approach to performance. Great information. Very professional – you can tell he has been fixing DB2 performance for a long time.

Tuning SQL for Performance — Sheryl Larsen

This class will increase the attendee’s ability to identify and fix today’s access path problems.

“Tuning SQL for Performance” divulges discoveries and recommendations from various SQL performance review assignments. Come see if you have similar SQL performance issues and get the instructions on how to fix them.  Issues discussed include non-optimal index design, access paths gone wild, Stage 2 predicates, misuse of SQL, excessive sorting, delayed filtering, lack of implementation of powerful old and new SQL features.

Attendees at this class will learn:

  • How DB2 executes index, table and join access paths.
  • When each access path is optimal and non-optimal.
  • Recommended SQL tuning techniques for changing the DB2 optimizer’s mind.
  • How to leverage other companies SQL mistakes.
  • How to identify potential access path problems and fix them.

What people say about this SQL performance training:

There was very valuable info presented enabling us to apply these lessons learned to our application.  Well Done!
~Director – Application Architecture, Insurance – Health industry, previous class attendee

I found Sheryl to a real product expert and presenter.
~DBA, Travel & Transportation industry, previous class attendee

DB2 Performance for Java Developers — Dave Beulke

Can your Java, J2EE DB2 application sustain a large number of client requests simultaneously? Or do they deadlock, become sluggish, or have painfully slow response times?

DB2 Performance for Java Developers discusses Java DB2 best practices, coding for optimum DB2 access and some simple changes you can make, some in the design and some in the coding phases, that can help your developers build faster, more robust applications.

This class takes the attendee through the Java application framework and discusses the application architecture choices. The class highlights new database design considerations and how to avoid Java programming problems related to Java sessions, messages and application persistence issues. The class also highlights the best practices for database connections, SQL access and error checking within a high performance environment.

Attendees will gain:

  • Detailed knowledge of Java Best Practices for DB2 application development
  • An extensive list of tips and techniques to maximize performance of their Java DB2 applications.
  • Knowledge for speeding up the Java module development, testing and implementation of Java DB2 applications.
