IOD Happenings: DB2 10, Sybase Goes to DB2 and Cognos

DB2 10 Becomes Available

Last week on October 22 IBM announced that the DB2 10 for z/OS was now generally available for all clients. I talked with some of the beta customers at the IOD DB2 training conference this week and they further documented all the great savings after installing the new version. I talked to one company that was so happy with the DB2 10 release that they are already getting ready to install the release next month into their production environment.

At the IOD DB2 training conference IBM is announcing a number of enhancements to their data management portfolio to over 10,000 attendees. The new Cognos 10 has a number of great enhancements for business analytics. These enhancements are wonderful for gathering analytics for all types of data and from all types of mainframe, UNIX and Windows platforms. Also several new features help distribute those analytic reports into all types of output—from standard reports to graphs to your mobile phone. Cognos 10 also leverages all the zIIP and zAAP processors within the zEnterprise environment so the analytic workload can be huge yet only minimally affect your software licensing charges, improving Cognos cost.

In the previous weeks I’ve talked about how easy it is to transfer your systems from Oracle to DB2. Now ANTS software announces that Sybase systems and applications can be migrated as easily to the DB2 platform. Their success migrating Sybase to DB2 is getting a lot of attention and they are working with a number of clients who are migrating from Sybase to the DB2 platform. DB2’s licensing costs, improved performance and scalability are really helping their clients be successful.

Also the new DB2 10 collaborative book with DB2 training information from Roger Miller, Julian Stuhler, Surekha Pureka, and me is now available. Request one from you IBM sales representative. Our book, DB2 10 for z/OS – Cost Savings ….. Out of the Box, along with several other books, is being given away at IOD DB2 training this year.
